Castle Close

Castle Close is a Norman motte-and-bailey castle in Mid Devon, built during the early post-Conquest period when lords imposed control across the English countryside. The earthwork still rises across two point seven hectares, though every timber hall and stone tower has long since rotted back into the soil. That absence is not a loss but a invitation: you can still picture guards pacing the bailey rail, hear dogs barking at the dark, and understand why a mound of soil became a boundary between worlds.
