Hannah Cowley blue plaque

This blue commemorative plaque records: Hannah Cowley 1743-1809 Playwright, poet, pioneer champion of women’s rights, lived here from 1801. Hannah, who was born in Tiverton, was a leading playwright of her day, her first play being produced by David Garrick at Drury Lane Recorded plaque organisation: Tiverton Civic Society.

Hannah Cowley was an influential 18th-century British playwright and poet known for her advocacy of women’s rights; she authored numerous plays that challenged gender norms and was the first woman to earn a living solely from writing.
