Cooling Castle stands as a ruined quadrangular fortress built in the 1380s by John Cobham to guard the Thames Estuary against French raids. It was the earliest English castle designed for gunpowder defence, yet Sir Thomas Wyatt captured and damaged it in eight hours during his 1554 rebellion. The shoreline has since receded two miles north, leaving the castle stranded among marshes where a farmhouse now occupies its broken heart.
