This black commemorative plaque records: Theatre Royal. A theatre stood on the site of this building from circa 1700-1884. Charles Dickens visited it as a boy and later wrote about it in "The Uncommercial Traveller" and "The Mystery of Edwin Drood".
Charles Dickens, a renowned English novelist, visited the Theatre Royal in Rochester as a child; his experiences there influenced descriptions in his works "The Uncommercial Traveller" and "The Mystery of Edwin Drood".
