Delany's Fort

Delany's Fort is a grassy ringfort in Woodtown, County Meath, large enough to hold a household, a herd and every argument about where the fence line belonged. Its bank still stands one to two and a half metres high, with old stone facing visible along part of the arc, while the entrance gap opens east-south-east as if waiting for morning light. The name Delany appears on Ordnance Survey maps from 1836 and 1912, but the family connection is no longer recorded, leaving the fort half-remembered: a place where ordinary people lived, worked and disappeared into the general human story.
