King John built Hanley Castle in the early thirteenth century as a hunting lodge rather than a fortress, complete with a deer park, fishponds, and four towers around a moat. The castle stood for three centuries before decay turned its stones into local building material, even supplying the bridge at Upton in the late eighteenth century. What remains is a place shaped by loss, where royal pride was stripped away and rebuilt into ordinary life.
