Thurnham Castle is a ruined motte and bailey on a steep North Downs spur that once watched the Pilgrim's Way to Canterbury. Its flint gatehouse and curtain walls still stand beside a chalk quarry that has bitten into the mound, while a shallow bowl on the summit hints at later digging or forgotten use. The castle fell into ruin by the sixteenth century, but it remained useful enough to host an air-raid observation post in the Second World War.
