Maidstone, Kent: Sutton Valence Castle is a ruined keep on a hill spur above the village, built in the late 12th century to watch the road toward the coast. Baldwin of Bethune probably raised it for the Counts of Aumale, then it moved through Marshal, de Montfort and Valence hands before ruin took it. The castle gave the village its name, and the name still does the work of remembering every hand that held it.
