On flat bogland connecting the bog island of Derrynaflan to dry land across the bog to the SW of the monastery (TS054-002----). Modern stone surfaced road (L 500m; Wth 3m) now used as laneway into Derrynaflan church (TS054-002002-) located on top of earlier causeway constructed from oak planks visible in places along the side of the modern laneway (NMI file). In the latin 'Lives of St. Ruadhan of Lorrha' there is a story about a causeway traversing the bog between the monastery of Derryvella and the monstery of Derrynaflan (Byrne 1980, 116). According to the story Bishop Columbanus, son of Dar Aine, of Daire Mar, sent Ruadan and his monks a present of a cask of butter in a cart drawn by two oxen, for whom a wide firm path miraculously appeared through the great bog of Lurga which lies between the two churches (ibid.).
