What is recorded here
Outlined is the Templemoyle burial ground, where a curving earthen bank and faint stone walls enclose a semi-circular mound on the northwest slope of a Donegal mountain ridge. The bank breaks at the south, perhaps marking an entrance into a place where people were set beneath the grass long before written memory reached it. Cattle still walk above the dead, untouched and unthinking, while the shape of the enclosure holds its quiet purpose in the field.
'Templemoyle Burial Ground' (DG029-041001-) consists of an irregularly shaped area defined on the N, W and S by a drop of .5m in the field level with possible evidence for a stone wall on these sides. On the E there is a curving earthen bank 1m high. This breaks off at the S possibly suggesting an entrance. There is a semi-circular mound, with central depression, inside the enclosure and a second circular mound of stones which may be a field clearance cairn. There are several other irregular and indistinct features internally. A small stone (DG029-041002-) .21m x .2m with a central depression .17m in diameter and 0.25m deep was also found. The site is located in rich grazing land on the NW slope of a mountain ridge.
The above description was derived from the 'Archaeological Survey of County Donegal. A description of the field antiquities of the County from the Mesolithic Period to the 17th century.' Compiled by: Brian Lacey with Eamon Cody, Claire Cotter, Judy Cuppage, Noel Dunne, Vincent Hurley, Celie O'Rahilly, Paul Walsh and Seán Ó Nualláin (Lifford: Donegal County Council, 1983). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated.
