Indicated is a crannog in County Mayo, Ireland. A crannog is an ancient lake dwelling, usually built on timber piles or a small island. People may have lived there when the land around it was wetter and the boundary between home and water was thinner. The name gives no further detail, but the form does: a small place made solid in a fluid one.
