Caves

Situated in the centre of an enclosure (CL009-022008-), in rough pasture within a relict field system (CL009-022001-). On the 1920 ed. of the OS 6-inch map there is a label ‘Caves’ adjacent to this location. Listed as ‘Man-made underground passage (possible)’ in the RMP (1996). This L-shaped terminal section of a Man-made underground passage extends SW–NE (L 4.6m) before turning N (L 3.7m) and terminating in a rounded/pointed end. In the N–S section (Wth 0.8m; H 0.9–1.2m) the roof is intact, with lintels rising over the external ground surface, noted by Bowmer (2019, 79, Note 8) as a relatively unusual feature of rectilinear enclosures in the Burren. Rocks are visible at the base, and there is no corbelling. In the NE–SW section (Wth c. 1.2m; possible max. D 1m) the lintels have fallen into the passage. The continuation of the Man-made underground passage to the SW is blocked by a fallen stone and is not visible on the surface. A hut site (CL009-022009-) lies c. 13m to the SE within the same enclosure (CL009-022008-). Another Man-made underground passage (CL009-022007-) lies c. 23m to the SSW, in an adjoining enclosure (CL009-022010-). The following image has been uploaded: CL009-022006-_01.jpg View from S.
