What is recorded here
Terraced three-bay single-storey estate worker’s house with dormer attic, c.1885, on a corner site retaining some early fenestration with single-bay single-storey canted side elevation to south. Reroofed and part refenestrated, pre-1999. One of a terrace of eleven. Pitched (shared) roof (gabled to dormer attic windows; hipped section to canted elevation) with replacement artificial slate, pre-1999, clay ridge tiles, rendered (shared) chimney stacks, and cast-iron rainwater goods on red brick eaves having consoles. Unpainted rendered walls. Square-headed window openings (triangular-headed to dormer attic) with stone sills. 1/1 timber sash window to ground floor with timber casement window to side (south) elevation, and replacement uPVC casement windows, pre-1999, to dormer attic. Square-headed door opening originally under gabled timber canopy on brackets (brackets remaining) with glazed timber panelled door. Road fronted on a corner site with concrete footpath to front.
An appealing small-scale house, built as part of a terrace of eleven identical houses (including 22809046 – 8, 219/WD-21-09-46 – 8, 219) sponsored by the Duke of Devonshire for workers on the Lismore Castle estate. The house is distinguished by inventive architectural detailing, including decorative brick work to the eaves, and a canted side elevation that successfully negotiates the corner site, although the removal of original canopy to the door opening has led to the loss of an appealing attribute of the composition.
