Why this matters

A local castle; wider significance not recorded.

What is recorded here

Situated on a natural hillock on flat pasture with extensive views. An impressive high flat-topped platform (diam 26m NE-SW) enclosed by a low earth and stone bank which has been mainly reduced to a scarp (H 1.7-5m) with a wide flat-bottomed fosse (Wth 5-8m; D 1m) and an outer bank (Wth 3-5m; ext. H 2-3m) and a possible causewayed entrance (Wth 3.1m) at SE. The sit has been constructed out of a natural glacial hillock which has been cut through at SW, the material being dumped on top of the hill to form a raised platform. The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Tipperary. Vol. 1 - North Tipperary' compiled by Jean Farrelly and Caimin O'Brien (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2002). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 22 September 2008
