Donogh O'Malley

Donogh O'Malley was born in Limerick on 18 January 1921, the eighth surviving child of a wealthy civil engineer. He played rugby for several provinces before war stopped his international dreams, then entered politics to become the minister who freed Irish children from secondary school fees. He died in Limerick on 10 March 1968 at forty-seven, leaving behind a wife who inspired Patrick Kavanagh's Raglan Road poem and a son who became an actor.
