Leixlip Castle

Attached three-bay single-storey rubble stone outbuilding with half-attic, c.1780, with single-bay double-height lean-to lower entrance bay to right having square-headed integral carriageway. Renovated, c.1970. Gable-ended and hipped roof with slate (continuing into lean-to over entrance bay to right). Clay ridge tiles. Square rooflights, c.1970. Remains of cast-iron rainwater goods. Random rubble stone walls. Square-headed window openings (slit-style). Replacement fixed-pane windows, c.1970. Square-headed integral carriageway. Replacement glazed timber boarded doors, c.1970. Set back from road in grounds shared with Leixlip Castle.

This outbuilding is an attractive rubble stone range that forms an integral component of the Leixlip Castle estate. The building is of some social and historical significance, attesting to the expansion of the estate in the late eighteenth century. The rubble stone construction is a feature shared in common with further buildings in the grounds and is representative of the traditional economic method of building at the time. Well-maintained, the outbuilding retains much of its original form and character, while replacement materials have been installed without adversely affecting the original integrity of the composition.
