Castle Hill Earthworks preserve a Knights Hospitaller preceptory, not a castle, inside a rectangular ditched enclosure north of Astill Lodge Road. The Hospitallers were at Beaumont Leys from around 1240 to 1482, using the place as a monastic grange or sheep farm whose receipts supported campaigns in the Holy Lands. A long dammed fishpond, bypass channel and marshy livestock pond still mark the ground beside the surviving bank and ditch.
