Huguenot Arch, Wetherby blue plaque

This blue commemorative plaque records: THE HUGUENOT ARCH This arch was originally over a passageway between two houses at West End (now Westgate) near the present library. Local tradition says that they were built by the descendants of Huguenot (Protestant) refugees from France. The French inscription stone reads “Love your neighbour as yourself, said the Evangelist” and was laid on 19th January 1827. Recorded plaque organisation: Wetherby Civic Society.

The Huguenot Arch in Wetherby commemorates the presence of Huguenot descendants, Protestant refugees from France who fled religious persecution; their settlement contributed to local community development post-16th century.
