Wortley Grammar School, C. J. Hargreave, Henry Oxley, and Joseph Cliff blue plaque

This blue commemorative plaque records: Wortley Grammar School was founded in 1677 by the bequest of Samuel Sunderland to teach boys English or Latin. It occupied this new schoolroom from 1814 to 1909 when the school closed. Notable pupils included mathematician and judge, C. J. C. J. Hargreave, Henry Oxley, and Joseph Cliff were notable pupils of Wortley Grammar School; Hargreave became a mathematician and judge, Oxley served as Leeds Mayor and was a banker, while Cliff owned a brickworks, each contributing to their respective fields and communities.
