Hutchinson Gresham, Joseph Lumley, and Peter Leopold Louis Francis Nassau Clavering-Cowper blue plaque

This blue commemorative plaque records: Newton House Earl Cowper built this fine house c.1820 on part of Squire Pastures Farm, a fore-runner of the high class residential development of New Leeds. In 1843 Hutchinson Gresham, pawnbroker, purchased the villa. Joseph Lumley, mustard, cocoa and chicory manufacturer lived here in 1851. Recorded plaque organisation: Leeds Civic Trust.

Earl Peter Leopold Louis Francis Nassau Clavering-Cowper was a British aristocrat who commissioned Newton House around 1820, contributing to the upscale residential development of New Leeds. Hutchinson Gresham, a pawnbroker, and Joseph Lumley, a manufacturer of mustard, cocoa, and chicory, subsequently inhabited the villa, reflecting its appeal to figures of varying social and economic standing in the 19th century.
