This blue commemorative plaque records: City Varieties Music Hall. Harry Lauder, Charlie Chaplin and Harry Houdini performed in this Music Hall built in 1865 for Charles Thornton on the site of the White Swan coaching inn. Famous venue of the "Good Old Days" first broadcast in 1953 Recorded plaque organisation: Leeds Civic Trust.
City Varieties, established in 1865 by Charles Thornton, was a renowned music hall where legendary performers like Sir Harry Lauder, Charlie Chaplin, and Harry Houdini graced the stage; it also became the famous venue for the BBC Radio show "The Good Old Days" beginning in 1953.
