William Russell Grace was born in Ballylinan, County Laois, Ireland, on May 10, 1832, the first Roman Catholic mayor of New York City and founder of W. R. Grace and Company. He opposed Tammany Hall, attacked police scandals and patronage, reduced the tax rate, and broke up the Louisiana Lottery during his terms as mayor. Grace also received the Statue of Liberty as a gift from France during his second term and died in New York City on March 21, 1904.
