Why this matters

Ladys Well in Ballyda is associated with Marian devotion, as suggested by its name and the traditional pilgrimage on 15 August, the Feast of the Assumption of Mary. The well was visited by large numbers of devotees, reflecting the enduring influence of Catholic tradition in the area despite historical disruptions.

What is recorded here

According to the OS Letters (1839), ‘There is a holy well called Lady’s Well in the Townland of Ballyda, much venerated still and frequented on the 15th of August by great numbers of devotees’ (O’Flanagan 1930, vol. 1, 274 (92)). O’Kelly (1969, 180) also mentions this well, stating that it is, ‘still frequented on the 15th of August for devotional purposes’. Compiled by: Jean Farrelly Date of upload: 24 August 2021
