Bawn

Why this matters

The Cistercian cloister at Knocknashee was fortified in the late 16th century, likely in response to regional instability, by converting it into a bawn through the strengthening of its western wall. This adaptation reflects the broader trend of monastic sites being repurposed for defense during the Tudor conquest of Ireland.

What is recorded here

The cloister (dims. 33.85m N-S; 23.2m E-W) of the Cistercian church (RO006-068005-) was fortified in the late 16th century when it was transformed into a bawn (dims. 49m N-S; 38.5m E-W) by the consolidation of the W wall of the E range, which originally housed the chapter house, and the building of new walls at the S and W. A gatehouse (RO006-068010-) was built in the W wall. Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload: 24 August 2010
