Kiln — corn-drying in Morett

Kiln — corn-drying

What is recorded here

New monument uncovered during excavation by Jonathan Dempsey under licence number 03E1367 in advance of the M7 Heath-Mayfield motorway scheme. Morett 6 was the truncated remains of a keyhole-shaped kiln. It measured 2.4m NNW-SSE by 1.2m by 0.19m at its greatest width. The base of the kiln sloped slightly upwards, from SSE to NNW. The location of a fire-spot at the SSE was indicated by a subcircular spread of compact, heavily oxidised sandy silt, 0.51m in diameter (Bennett 2006, 295).
