Settlement cluster in Killanully

Settlement cluster

What is recorded here

The Down Survey (1655-6) Barony map show a number of small structures and two mills (CO086-121---- and CO086-122----) in an area named 'Killenelly'. This probably represents the mid-17th century settlement of the present Killanully. There are no visible remains at ground level of any 17th-century buildings in this area. Farm buildings of 19th-century appearance are situated in the NW corner of a pasture field, the area roughly corresponding to that shown on the Down Survey (1655-6) map. The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 5' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2009). Date of upload: 22 December 2009

This remains an important historical record, but the official description says the monument is no longer visible or has been destroyed.

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.

The map shows the centre of the officially named townland area, not the monument. The government record does not identify the exact monument point.
