What is recorded here

Hardiman (1846, 370) refers to 'Cill na Manach, i.e. the church of the monks, a townland containing the ruins of a small abbey, situated to the north of Lough Hackett'. There is a vague local tradition of an early church in this td. but its exact location is unknown. It is also possible that this reference is to the possible church (GA042-001002-) in the adjoining td. of Abbeytown. (Gwynn and Hadcock 1970, 392) The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'. Compiled by Olive Alcock, Kathy de hÓra and Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999). Date of upload: 05 August 2010

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.

The map shows the centre of the officially named townland area, not the monument. The government record does not identify the exact monument point.
