What is recorded here

Indicated was a circular rath in County Mayo, visible on maps from 1838 to 1922 before ploughing and time erased its edges. It sat on a narrow ridge where the land dropped away to the east and south, forcing anyone who entered to feel watched from every direction. The fortress is gone except for a grassy swelling and the memory of a boundary that once held human life against the open sky.

In pasture, located on a NNW−SSE rise/low ridge, with a fall of ground to NE and SE, in an area of sharply undulating terrain. This enclosure, probably a rath, is shown on the 1838 OS 6-inch map as a circular ringfort-like embanked enclosure and on the 1922 edition as a circular hachured enclosure (diam. 30-35m). It has been levelled; a low, grass-covered subcircular rise (diam. 25-30m), without clearly defined limits, is evident at the location. Compiled by: Jane O’Shaughnessy Date of upload: 15 May 2020
