What is recorded here

Indicated was a double circle in County Offaly, a large earthen field surrounding a smaller central fort, until machines levelled both banks about ten years ago. The outer ring may have marked ownership or ceremony, while the inner fort gave shelter, stored goods or excluded unwanted visitors. Its disappearance does not erase the shape; it returns the place to memory, where circles can still be drawn, walked and imagined.

Site levelled about ten years ago, consisted of a large circular area enclosed by an earthen bank with external fosse which acted as a circular field boundary. Inside this enclosure in the centre was located another enclosure defined by an earthen bank and external fosse. This latter enclosure was locally known as a fort and may have been a ringfort. Aerial photograph (CUCAP, ATC 58) shows large circular enclosure with smaller enclosure in the centre.
