Kildangan Castle — Kildangan

Castle — unclassified

Why this matters

The original Kildangan Castle, featuring square corner towers, was likely built by the Butler family, who were prominent in the area during the medieval period. It was dynamited in the 19th century to make way for the construction of Kildangan House (1882–86), reflecting the transition from defensive to residential architecture in the region.

What is recorded here

According to Bence-Jones (1978, 166) the present ‘Kildangan House’, dating to 1882-6, and in the Victorian-Jacobean style, stands on the site of an earlier castle which had square corner towers, and which was dynamited in 1882. The castle was originally in the possession of a branch of the Fitzgerald family. (Killanin and Duignan 1967, 379) Compiled by: Gearóid Conroy Date of upload: 31 August 2012
