George Maxwell raised Newark Castle in 1478 beside the last shipyard on the Lower Clyde. Ferguson Shipbuilders still stands close to its west, while removed yards to the east opened parkland and a bypass road that reveal the castle across the water. The castle has watched Port Glasgow grow from an offloading point into a shipbuilding centre, and it still stands at the edge of that changed river.
