What is recorded here

Marked only on the 1914 ed. of the OS 6-inch map where it is described in italic lettering as 'Inscribed Stone'. It is situated on the N-facing slope of a knoll. Described as a headstone with an illegible inscription which may have been in French (OS Name Books). It is not visible in an area of grass-covered quarries, and its precise location is not known. Archaeological testing (21E0180) by M. Fitzpatrick of an extensive area of about 4 ha (c. 10 acres) around this feature produced no archaeological material and no evidence of this stone, which he suggests might be the original location of any of the ogham stones now at the rath (RO015-161002-) c. 600m to the W (excavations.ie 2021: 056). (Fitzpatrick 2021, 22) Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload: 24 August 2010 Amended: 4 August 2021
