Indicated — Saints Island

Ecclesiastical enclosure

Why this matters

A local fairy fort (ringfort/rath); wider significance not recorded.

What is recorded here

In pasture on a low-lying promontory in Lough Ree and connected to the mainland by a causeway (1.1km) across marshy ground. The size and subcircular shape (79m NW-SE; 57m NE-SW) of the graveyard (LF026-016003-), which is defined by a stone wall, suggest that it may have been built on the line of an early ecclesiastical enclosure. The Augustinian Priory of All Saints (LF026-016002-) lies in the W half of the interior and in the NE corner there is a possible church (LF026-016004-). Compiled by: Patrick F.
