What is recorded here

On the fairly gently sloping N side of a small E-W valley, c. half way between the valley floor and the crest of the ridge to the N, surrounded by grassland. There are good views in all directions. The enclosure is heavily overgrown with trees and scrub. Indicated as a roughly circular enclosure (diam. c. 63m N-S; c. 65m E-W) on the 1st (1839) ed. OS 6-inch map with a townland boundary running NE-SW just N of centre and a field boundary running NW-SE from the NW into the NE quadrant to meet the townland boundary and another running NW-SE from the SE into the SW quadrant to meet the townland boundary. The enclosing bank in the SW sector is depicted as being straight, though this may have been modified to align with another NW-SE field boundary which runs NW from the W edge. On the 1900 revision the S portion of the enclosure is depicted as being planted with trees and a farm roadway skirts the SE quadrant. The enclosure is defined by a bank (int. H c. 0.5m; ext. H c. 1.75m; Wth 2m) and in the NE sector there is an external wide flat-bottomed fosse (Wth 4m; D c. 1m). Compiled by: Jean Farrelly Date of upload: 23 June 2020
