Why this matters
A local fairy fort (ringfort/rath); wider significance not recorded.
What is recorded here
In gently undulating grassland. Named 'Cahergon Fort' on OS Fair Plan, what survives is an oval cashel (E-W 64m, N-S 51m) defined by a poorly preserved drystone wall. Though grassed-over, and partly destroyed at S, double wall-facing is evident intermittently. Rubble from land reclamation has been dumped on top and against it. A field wall cuts the monument at NE and SW. The S half of the interior has been reclaimed but a number of internal divisions are visible in N half. A gap at NNE could be original.
The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'. Compiled by Olive Alcock, Kathy de hÓra and Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999).
