What is recorded here

In pasture, on elevated ground, in the NW corner of a field. Indicated on the 1838 OS 6-inch map as an embanked circular area (diam. c. 25m). The rath is now levelled; the remains consist of a slightly raised subcircular area (c. 20m NW-SE; c. 23m NE-SW) defined E-SSW by a gently sloping undulation, merging with a natural dip in ground level E-SE. The W side is defined by a straight field boundary bordering a road and is densely covered in vegetation and difficult to inspect. This field boundary appears to slightly truncate the enclosure but at NW may incorporate part of the enclosing element. From N-NE the enclosure is defined by a scarp (H 1.3m) incorporated into a NW-SE field boundary which retains a shallow curve. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Sligo' compiled by Ursula Egan, Elizabeth Byrne, Mary Sleeman with Sheila Ronan and Connie Murphy (Dublin Stationery Office, 2005). Date of upload: 18 January 2008
