What is recorded here

De Courcy describes a lighthouse on Howth Head in 1685 which had been built by Sir Robert Reading in 1665 (De Courcy 1996, 17-18). It is thought to have replaced a beacon. This was noted by Scalé and Richards in 1765. The base of this lighthouse is buried in a garden behind the old Bailey cottage (pers. comm. Paddy Healy). The exact location of this monument is unknown. The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.

The map shows the centre of the officially named townland area, not the monument. The government record does not identify the exact monument point.
