What is recorded here
The Urban Survey of Westmeath (Bradley et. al. 1985, 120) recorded that the extent of the Dominican priory (WM019-089004-) in 1548 mentions 'an old hospital now thrown down' in a field called 'Spyttelfield', then owned by the Dominicans (White 1943, 290-1). This was presumably located in the adjoining townland of Spittlefield located northeast of the town, perhaps in the vicinity of the present Mullingar Mental Hospital (Lee 1974-5, 227).
