HOLY WELL: TOBERDONEY in Toberbilly

HOLY WELL: TOBERDONEY

What is recorded here

Toberdoney marks a holy well in Toberbilly, County Antrim, where clean water still rises through ancient stone. People may have drunk from it, washed wounds or left small gifts before roads and empires changed the shape of devotion. The name preserves that much older pact between human thirst and earth.
The official Northern Ireland record identifies this as HOLY WELL: TOBERDONEY. Recorded period: UNCERTAIN. The official map point was placed at the centre of the recorded archaeological site from the source map reference.
Linked to Saint Doney, the well was traditionally visited for healing and protection, with local folklore suggesting its waters had curative properties, especially for skin ailments and livestock health. Little specific historical record survives, but such wells were often sites of pre-Christian ritual later associated with early Christian saints.

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
