Why this matters
The Jacobite army, led by Charles Edward Stuart (Bonnie Prince Charlie), was defeated by the British government forces under the Duke of Cumberland at the Battle of Culloden on 16 April 1746. The victory ended the Jacobite rising of 1745 and marked the last major battle fought on British soil, leading to the suppression of the Highland way of life and the consolidation of British authority in Scotland.
