Why this matters
Dalkeith House, originally a medieval castle, was later developed into an 18th-century country house by the powerful Douglas-Home family, who held the Earldom of Home. It is important as a historic seat of one of Scotland's most influential noble families and as an example of the transition from medieval fortress to Georgian country residence.
