Leerdam

Steamship (period Unassigned)-(1923)

Why this matters

Leerdam was a steamship built in 1923, later identified as a Dutch passenger liner that sank off the coast of Scotland in 1940 during World War II. It was torpedoed by a British submarine, HMS *Truant*, in an incident known as the "Leerdam Affair," resulting in the loss of 177 lives out of 180 on board; its sinking highlighted tensions between Allied naval forces and civilian shipping.
