Kinkell Castle is a compact 16th century tower house in Ross and Cromarty, built for the MacKenzies of Gairloch with gun loops guarding its entrance and a defaced 1594 shield above the hall fireplace. After years as a farm building and then a ruined shadow, Gerald Laing rebuilt it from 1966, removing a later wing and recovering the severe little fortress that Scottish countryside still remembers.
