Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Achnagoul as Standing Stone (prehistoric), Standing Stone (prehistoric)(possible), Stone Row (neolithic) - (bronze Age)(possible). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 10m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.

Achnagoul is likely associated with the Neolithic or Bronze Age and may have functioned as a ceremonial or territorial marker. Its alignment or grouping with other stones may reflect ritual practices or astronomical observations known in prehistoric Scotland.
