What is recorded here

This black commemorative plaque records: Loch-Nan-Uamh Viaduct. The legend of builder Robert McAlpine's horse and cart falling down inside a pier of Glenfinnan Viaduct in c1899 was corrected in 2001 when radar imaging proved that the event occurred here in the centre pier (see Rcahms Broadsheet 10)
Robert McAlpine was a prominent Scottish civil engineer and contractor known for his work on major infrastructure projects; the legend of his horse and cart falling into a pier during the construction of Loch-Nan-Uamh Viaduct highlights the challenging conditions of early railway construction in Scotland.
