Port an Eilein is a basalt sea cliff or coastal rock feature formed during the Paleogene period, around 60 to 55 million years ago, as part of the North Atlantic Igneous Province. It is notable for its association with volcanic activity linked to the opening of the North Atlantic Ocean and may exhibit columnar jointing typical of ancient lava flows.
