Castle Stuart stands in Highland, Scotland, where a medieval castle built about 1625 by the Earl of Moray still occupies the site of an older Hallhill Castle. The date 1625 appears in stones set high in the front and rear walls, while the open work on the south-west staircase and some battlements belong to later alteration. Beneath the living mansion, the land holds bronze Age pits and rim sherds, prehistoric roundhouses, an Iron Age enamel finger ring and unassigned flint, suggesting that people have shaped this place long before the castle gave it its name.
