Castletown Airfield opened in May 1940 as a satellite to Wick, guarding Scapa Flow and Northern Scotland until the last operational aircraft left in April 1944. Grass now chokes the concrete dispersal bays and ghost hangars, while a forgotten naval gun once stared out from the station headquarters before the Navy reclaimed it. The site still carries the shape of that urgent wartime purpose, even when the machines are gone.

Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Castletown Airfield as Pillbox (20th Century). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 10m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.
