Castletown Airfield operated from May 1940 until April 1944 as a satellite to Wick, helping defend Scapa Flow and Northern Scotland. Grass now chokes its concrete, the decontamination centre holds cow manure, and the dismantled hangars have vanished into memory. Yet a 4.7 inch naval gun once stood outside the station HQ before the Navy retrieved it, proving even temporary military outposts could grab extraordinary hardware from the sea.

Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Castletown Airfield as Pillbox (20th Century). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 1m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.
