Castle Mattoch

Motte (medieval)(possible)

What is recorded here

No rowan, no mound, no wall: only forestry and a coordinate. Yet Macrae placed a castle at Garbole Bridge, commanding four horizons before men carried its stones into farm boundaries. Mattoch may have been a watchhouse, a boundary marker, or a memory dressed as fact. In a land that eats its own evidence, even doubt belongs to the place.
Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Castle Mattoch as Motte (medieval)(possible). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 100m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.

The historic-place record does not grant public access. Check current conditions and ownership before entering land or a building.
